How to get a driver's license in New Mexico


You may apply for a new driver's license at any Motor Vehicle Division in New Mexico.

To apply for a New Jersey driver's license:

To apply for a driver's license in New Mexico you must be 15 years of age or older. If you happen to be between the ages of 15 - 17 you will be required to successfully pass a driver's education class.You will also be required to present parental consent, and provide proof you have completed a graduated driver license class. The next step in obtaining a driver's license in New Mexico is to download a copy of the New Mexico driver's manual, and prepare your self for the following exams that are mandatory for you to pass a vision screening, a written knowledge test, and a road skills driving test. You can then head over to your local Motor Vehicle Division center.

  • Appropriate identification.
  • Proof of New Mexico residency.
  • Proof of identification number. It can be any of the following:
    1. Social Security Number.
    2. A verification document from Social Security confirming your SSN.
    3. A valid passport.
    4. Matricula Consular issued after February 1, 2005 by the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque or El Paso.
    5. Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) card or the letter from the IRS issuing your ITIN.

If you are between the ages of 18 - 24 and this is your first time applying for a driver's license in New Mexico the process is a little different.
